R&R Zzzz: Origin Story
Have you ever felt so stressed out, uncomfortable, tired, and achy that nothing helped you fall asleep? Or stay asleep if you can fall asleep? That you might do anything for some R&R Zzzz?
Then wondered whether or not you’d be able to get any sleep for a while because nothing seemed to help?
That was me up until last year when I discovered the benefits of Melissa officinalis essential oil. Melissa is also known as Lemon Balm, a healing herb used in many holistic medicine practices for centuries. I had heard about it, but never considered trying the herb back then because herbalism classes were not on my radar at the time. Then I was concerned about using the essential oil because of its chemistry and safety concerns.
What safety concerns, you ask? Well, Melissa oil can cause sensitization and skin irritation when used topically. It may cause problems with diabetes medication when taken internally; and is not recommended for use on children 2 years and younger. You can learn more at this profile on AromaWeb. But these concerns are ONLY for the essential oil. Refer to the Lemon Balm link for more info about the herb and plant.
But back to the R&R Zzzz blend. When I bought the class kit from Aromatics International, it came with a 5ml bottle of Melissa officinalis essential oil. We were in section 4 or 5 and learning about a chemical family called Aldehydes that were known to be skin irritating and sensitizing when used on their own, but safe in small doses when combined with skin healing or skin nourishing essential oils. I smelled the Melissa oil as part of an exercise and remembered how calm I felt afterwards.
The lavender, bergamot, rose, jasmine, palmerosa and other essential oils well known for easing anxiety/depression while calming the central nervous system to promote sleep didn’t work. Something triggered body memories and panic attack sensations, so I was high on adrenaline and feeling pain everywhere. So hot, even in winter, itchy and unable to settle down. I woke up in the middle of the night and decided to try Melissa in the diffuser.
Then I went back to bed and tried to relax. Imagine my surprise when I woke up to my alarm the next morning feeling awake. I noted the sensation in my recipe journal, and then experimented 3 more times with different combinations of essential oils with Melissa. Some worked better than others, but they all worked.
Finally, I decided to not use the diffuser at all for a few nights. By the second night, I was back to having sleep problems. Experimented using some of the other essential oils from previous tests, but without the Melissa. None of them worked until I added the Melissa back again.
What you’re getting in R&R Zzzz is the combination of essential oils that worked best after about 3 weeks of experiments in 2019. I hope, if you decide to try the lemony, citrus, herby blend, that it helps you rest and sleep too.
The R&R Zzz works best as an inhalation only product because of safety concerns with using Melissa and Bergamot essential oil on the skin.

Product Options: R&R Refocus line
Product 1 is the inhaler
My favorite reason for using an inhaler these days is Gale, my rescue cat and ESA.
Before getting her, I didn’t realize that essential oils and liquid potpourri were among the top 5 household poisons for cats. No way do I want her to get sick because I used a diffuser or a room spray too close to her favorite relaxing spaces.
Even when I blend, I open windows, turn on the air purifier, and close the door to the bedroom (with just enough space open for her to get in and out) so Gale has a safe space to retreat if the essential oil smell gets too strong. Since Gale has strong boundaries and is wary of everything, she heads to the bedroom the moment she feels uncomfortable.
Great for me when working, but not so much when we’re sleeping. I am her favorite pillow, so using an inhaler allows me the benefits of R&R Zzzz while keeping Gale safe. If you have a cat or share space with other beings sensitive to smells, etc., an inhaler is an excellent way to use essential oils while keeping them safe.
Product 2 is the stock blend.
If you are a person who uses essential oil blends for a variety of purposes or prefers diffusers and room sprays, I recommend the stock blend.
Depending on your skin sensitivity, existing medical conditions, being pregnant or nursing, or types of medications you use, R&R Refocus may be usable for wash off products like hand soaps and house cleaners. But that is not recommended unless you are:
- familiar with the safety concerns when using essential oils
- confident in your aromatherapy knowledge/skills
- willing to pay for a consultation that allows me to customize R&R Zzzz for you
The first products available in the web store will be inhalers.
Why Inhalers and Stock Blends only?
- Portable size that can be used discreetly anywhere inside or outside the home
- Versatile in that one inhaler can support an individual in man different stressful or tense environments
- Reusable as long as you can remove the plastic cap on the bottom of the container
- Easy to use and inexpensive
- Long lasting – inhalers can last 6 months to 1 year depending on how it is stored and how often it is used
The stock blend will be available by special request because that product takes longer to make, has a shorter shelf life, and is in limited quantity at this time.
