Aromatherapy: Background & Happy Day Diffuser Recipe

This business is about aromatherapy and its benefits to help manifest goals. It’s also about education and support from a trauma-informed perspective. This is why I started with coping strategies and sharing knowledge first. These posts (I hope) shared enough parts of me to earn your respect and trust in my knowledge and experience.

Aromatherapy is something I stumbled into from many different directions. My first experience came from extreme skin allergies and sensitivities to common household cleaners and laundry detergents. Aromatherapy came up again during my time in group therapy. And more often in my own research about living a more natural lifestyle – i.e. one that helped relieve some of the constant physical pain without use of medication or surgery – on a budget.

That said, today’s post is about aromatherapy and diffusers.

Aromatherapy & Essential Oils

Aromatherapy has many benefits and can provide physical, emotional, and spiritual support. This blend offers emotional and spiritual support for a challenging day. I use the drop-by-drop blending method taught at the Aromahead Institute so this recipe includes how many drops each essential for 300ml of water container in a diffuser.

If your diffuser is ultrasonic or has a different water container capacity, this recipe will probably still work. It’s a small amount of oil that can be used multiple times in a day for short periods.

But if you are not comfortable using the full amount, you can start with 1 drop of each oil.

I am using this recipe today to help me focus on my plans instead of curling up under the covers. It includes Sweet Basil, Cardamom, and Melissa.

The descriptions below focus on energetic properties instead of therapeutic or clinical properties since I am using the blend for emotional and spiritual instead of physical support.

Basil (Ocimum basilicum ct. linalool) is a plant most often known for its use in pesto. It has a sweet, herbaceous smell that sometimes has a hint of spice or heat too. Energetically, Basil is emotionally grounding and uplifting while also improving mental clarity. It can offer emotional protection and support during stressful times too. But basil can also be skin nourishing and help with vomiting or feelings of nausea too. For this essential oil, like many others, how it can be used depends on the chemistry.

Why share this? Because education is the difference between buying a plant-based essential oil that matches the name on the label vs an adulterated or manufactured essential oil created to smell like the name on the label.

In this recipe, I am using Ocimum basilicum ct. linalool – a version of the essential oil that is also safe to use on skin and be inhaled.

Cardamom (Elettaria cardamomum) is a plant used in cooking and tea blends – a foundation ingredient in chai – that has warming and energizing properties that encourage mental clarity and provide emotional support. It has a warm, spicy smell that can also smell a little camphorous or eucalyptus like because of the 1,8 cineole – a chemical component found in both essential oils.

Why share this? Because of the shared chemical components, cardamom can sometimes be skin-irritating and is not recommended for skin use unless in small amounts and blended with a carrier oil + skin healing and/or skin nourishing essential oils.

Cardamom is also not recommended to use with children under 5 years of age (topical) and used with caution around young children because of the oil’s hot and spicy nature.

Melissa (Melissa officinalis) is a plant also known as lemon balm. It has a lemony, citrusy scent that lingers in the air. Among its energetic properties, Melissa is known for calming and cooling agitated emotions, reducing anxious feelings, and opening the mind. It can be used on the skin short term and in small doses, but is not recommended for long term use like with bath salts or massage oil as it can be skin irritating.

Why share this? Because Melissa as an essential oil has different uses and properties compared to the herb (like basil and cardamom) because it is a highly concentrated version of the plant that only includes one specific plant part instead of the whole plant. And this essential oil has serious safe use recommendations:

  • Avoid using on children under 2 years (skin, but caution with inhaled versions too)
  • When taken internally (not discussed here), Melissa may interfere with diabetes medications
  • Potential pregnancy concerns if used topically at higher than 0.5% dilution in a blend

Happy Day Diffuser Recipe

1 drop of Basil (Ocimum basilicum ct. linalool)

1 drop of Melissa (Melissa officinalis)

1 drop of Cardamom (Elettaria cardamomum)

Safety Concerns

If you have pets, it’s best not to leave a diffuser on for long periods of time. Also, limit diffuser use to one room so pets and anyone else can leave if the scent becomes uncomfortable in any way (overpowering, overwhelming, etc.)

Do not leave your diffuser unattended – even if it has automatic timer settings and an automatic turn-off setting – if you have pets or children in the house.

Keep the diffuser away from direct contact with pets and young children.

Follow the diffuser’s instructions for care and cleaning. If the diffuser provides instructions for how much oil to use at one time, please adjust this recipe to defer to those instructions
